Utilities - SCMD 1.11.3

A new version of SCMD, the multichannel PCM and multichip soundplayer for MSX has been released. In this release, a bug concerning the p command was fixed and the loading speed of SDT files was increased on emulated systems. An English version of the MML compiler manual (albeit an automatic translation) is available now as well.

The SCMD player allows you to play multiple samples on one or even two SCC cartridges at the same time, which is similar to playing MOD-files. SCMD also supports 'ordinary' sound playback on PSG, MSX-MUSIC and SCC. Several mp3 files of the results can be heard on this website. A special MML compiler to support this functionality is available on the SCMD website as well. More SCMD music can be found over here.

D4 Enterprise have released the classic Compile shooter for MSX called Aleste for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch in the iPhone Appstore. Running on a new official MSX emulator, specifically developed for the Apple devices, the game can be controlled by tilting the iPhone. The international version runs Aleste in English, as previously released in WOOMB. An extra screenshot of the game can be spotted in D4E's press release (PDF).

ASCII have announced a new version of MSXPLAYer for the Sharp EM-One Alpha, which is a mobile phone/PDA running on Windows Mobile version 6. Bundled with the emulator, which is only available online, are several games, such as Hanafuda Koikoi, Jump Up! and Bokosuka Wars. From the looks of it, the emulator will deliver an MSX1 experience only.

A new version of Bargain has been released. Since we last reported about the tool, error messages were improved, support for interlaced images was added, the user-interface was improved, it has been optimized for speed and better compression and several bugs were removed.

Bargain is a lossless compression tool for MSX images in screen mode 5 upto 12. On the Bargain website, you can find the tool itself, the sources and a comparison of Bargain to other compression techniques and formats, such as LZH, GIF or MAG.

Barely a week after the release of C-BIOS 0.22, the C-BIOS team manages to whip out version 0.23! C-BIOS is a substitute BIOS which can be used for running MSX emulators. This release includes:
  • Updated blueMSX configuration files, thanks to Benoît Delvaux
  • Fixed version reported by MSX1 logo ROM
  • Fixed several video routines so they work on MSX1 VDPs (TMS99xx)
  • A couple of other bug fixes

MSX Resource Center - Happy 2009!

Finally, with the MRC crew sober again (and the hangovers long gone) it's time to wish you a very, very happy 2009! Looking back on 2008, one can safely say it was yet another good year for the MSX community. Not only because we could celebrate the 25th anniversary of our beloved MSX computer system, but also because, once again, the combined efforts of the MSX community produced quite a few things that make our shared hobby so worthwhile.

Take Explode, for instance - or Bombaman Extra Ammo and Cow. And what to think of such releases as Montana John and the Templars Treasure, Perfect Fit and Invasion of the Big Pixels. All nice community releases that saw light of day in 2008! As for hardware, we can look forward to VSU, experiment with and enjoy NoWind and Flax. The revival took quite a turn with the MSX trademarks moving to MSX Licensing Corporation and Bazix breaking its relationship with MSX Association. As it looks now, the chances of a Western Edition of the One Chip MSX to be realized look further away than ever and it is difficult to estimate what the MSX Revival has in store for us this year.

The activity of the MRC crew (and yours truly in particular) was a tad on the low side last year, resulting in less news posts and less visits. The overall numbers still look very impressive for a website that primarily focuses on the MSX computer system, though. As you may have noticed by now, the aliens have once again abducted our banner system, which can only mean one thing: a new version of the MRC is in the making. During a meeting held at MRC HQ in Zaanstad last months the first plans were made for what is to be MRC 2k9 and if all goes well a big website makeover will see light of day in 2009! Don't say we didn't warn you! As usual, we end the happy new years post with the year in numbers. Here are some statistics of the activity on our website during 2008 compared to the activity of 2007:
  • Visitors: 1.297.104 (1.202.883)
  • News posts: 368 (499)
  • Forum posts: 13.995 (16.803)
  • Reactions: 2.877 (3.088)
The values mentioned in parentheses are the statistics of 2007. In 2008, a grand total of 596 different people - a new record - contributed to the contents of the MSX Resource Center by submitting one or more articles, news posts, forum posts or reactions to news posts. Just like previous years, the most active members of the MSX Resource Center deserve some extra attention as a token of our appreciation. In 2008, the following 10 MRC members were the most active, based on a score of 6 points per news post, 2 per forumpost and 1 per reaction, doubling the score on 'first posts':
  1. manuel (1.498)
  2. ARTRAG (1.261)
  3. DemonSeed (1.039)
  4. PingPong (938)
  5. dvik (593)
  6. Yukio (591)
  7. jltursan (590)
  8. Huey (538)
  9. MäSäXi (489)
  10. NYYRIKKI (486)
Prolonging his status as most active MRC member of the year for the second time in a row, manuel will yet again receive a small present from the MRC crew as a token of our appreciation. Our thanks go out to him all the others who contributed to the MRC. Next year we will also reward a prize to the most active member at the MRC. We hope you will keep visiting and enriching the contents of our website for a long time to come!

We would also like to thank all the active MSX developers who keep bringing us new and surprising hardware, software, websites and magazines. Last, but certainly not least, we would like to thank all the people who have sent us a donation by bank or PayPal this year. As the MRC is growing and growing, so are the costs to keep the site online and in movement. Even with small donations, you helped (and are helping) to keep our site online. Respect!

The entire MRC crew would like to wish you a happy, healthy, prosperous 2009 and we're all looking forward to celebrate the 26th anniversary of our beloved MSX computer system in style. To a year loaded with MSX action!

Games & Demos - Invasion of the Big Pixels

MSX explorer only_69 shows he's at his game again in 2009. This time he has mapped Goody (MSX2), an adventure game by Opera Soft. Opera Soft, founded in 1987, was a highly active Spanish game producer in the late 80's and early 90's until the start of the 16bit era. Other famous titles by this softwarehouse are La Abadía del Crimen, the Livingstone games and of course the graphical shell Ease.

Swedish MSX programmer Sdw has just finished his first MSX demo. It's a production with a style similar to modern retro demos on other systems, in other words: no boring scroll 'n logo, just great effects such as bumpmapping, fullscreen plasmas, etc. Requirements for this fresh new demo are: MSX1 with 64kB RAM and 16kB VRAM. Enjoy!

Fairs & Meetings - MSX Fair Nijmegen - reminder

In three weeks, January 24th, the annual MSX Fair in Nijmegen will take place again. Currently, the following participants will be present at this event:
  • openMSX Team - Demonstration of the upcoming openMSX 0.7.0., the new Catapult and the debugger GUI. And probably they'll be showing openMSX running on several interesting machines (like the GP2X handheld, Asus eee PC, OLPC).
  • MSX Vriendenclub Mariënberg - Promotion of MSX Vriendenclub Mariënberg
  • Bitwise - Promotion of Spanish and Brazillian games
  • Delta Soft - Demonstration and sale of home made software, like Konami Quiz 2 and Lucky Darts.
  • Maarten (NOP) & Raymond
  • Stichting Sunrise - Sales and repairs of Sunrise products
  • MSX Club West-Friesland - Promotion and sale of MSX equipment, including books and magazines
  • Jetze Mellema - Sale of all his MSX computers, including some rare ones!
If you wish to have a booth at this MSX fair for yourself or your organization, contact the organizers as soon as possible. Even if you just want to sit there and play games, or do whatever else you have in mind, it may be practical to reserve a booth. Besides booths, there is still plenty of room left. The stage is still available for any sorts of acts you wish to perform, such as live playing music, VJ'ing, lectures, demonstrations, and if you bring one: poledancing!

There are also still plenty of seats available for the afterparty dinner in the nearby Chinese restaurant. This dinner is limited to 35 participants, to prevent the crammed -but cosy- chaos from 2008.
